Music Educator

Who is the course for?
It's a bespoke teacher-training course for musicians, composers, producers and industry personnel. It's available as:

  • A Level 3/4 option leading to a Level 3 Rockschool Music Educator qualification and a City & Guilds Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) at Level 4. This enables teaching in FE colleges, prisons, armed forces etc.

Entry requirements?
CTLLS: a Level 3 qualification (an A Level, BTEC, Rockschool Diploma etc.). You will also be expected to undergo a CRB check (Criminal Records Bureau).

What is the course about?
It will take you on a journey of understanding how people learn, with particular focus on music, and how you can plan, create, teach and assess learning.

For the CTTLS qualification you will need to undertake at least 30 hours of teaching placement. You will usually be expected to organise this placement at a convenient institution and your tutor will be on hand to offer advice and guidance on this.

What will I do on the course?

  • Plan for inclusive learning.
  • Use a range of teaching and learning strategies in delivering music.
  • Develop, manage and use resources, including new and emerging technologies.
  • Use a range of communication skills and methods to communicate effectively with learners.
  • Negotiate appropriate individual goals with learners.
  • Monitor, assess, record and report learner progress and achievement to meet the requirements of the learning programme and the organisation.
  • Learn key concepts and principles of assessment.
  • Use different types of assessment.
  • Understand the role of feedback and questioning in the assessment of learning.
  • Understand how reflection, evaluation and feedback can be used to develop own practice.
  • Learn how to market and promote yourself as a music educator.


How is it delivered?
Blended learning consists of 12 three-day group sessions over one academic year, plus study at home and a teaching work placement. Sessions are delivered by experienced music educators and include small group exercises, observations, discussions and practical teaching tasks. This is backed up by comprehensive online support resources and tutorial support via email, telephone and Skype.

Work experience?
Yes, you will be required to undertake a teaching work placement. This can be close to your place of residence.


Qualification?

  • Level 3 Rockschool Music Educator qualification plus City & Guilds Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) at Level 4.

Where is it delivered?

Please note that courses are subject to cancellation if there is insufficient recruitment. In such cases applicants will be offered an alternative course where possible.
